Wood is the frame under almost everything we make. What decides whether a piece lasts thirty years or three is not the species on the label — it is whether the timber was seasoned properly, whether the joints are cut or stapled, and whether the grain was chosen before it was cut. All three happen in our own factory.

Why seasoning decides everything

Fresh timber is full of water. As it dries it shrinks — unevenly — and a piece built from it opens at the joints, cups across a table top and cracks along a panel. India makes this worse, not better: a monsoon and a dry summer in the same year move wood a long way.

Seasoned timber has already done its moving. We buy it seasoned, store it in the factory long enough to settle to the same moisture the room will have, and only then cut it.

Walnut, teak, oak — and what each is good at

Walnut is dark, fine-grained and the most furniture-like of the woods. It takes a hand-rubbed finish beautifully and it is what most people mean when they picture a good dining table.

Teak is oily, stable and the toughest of the three — the reason it is used for swings, for anything near a window and for pieces that see damp air. Oak is pale, open-grained and takes a bleached or limed finish that lightens a room.

Burl wood furniture in India, and how veneer works

Burl wood furniture is furniture faced with burl, a growth on the side of a tree where the grain has swirled instead of running straight. Burl is rare, it comes in small pieces, and it is far too unstable to build a frame from, so it is always a veneer.

A veneer is a thin leaf of that pattern laid over a stable core, and anyone telling you a burl panel is solid is selling you something else. That is not a compromise: a burl-veneered panel over a proper core is more stable than solid timber. We use solid wood for frames and legs, veneer for the faces, and we tell you which is which on every piece.

Joints, and how to check one

Open a drawer and look at the corner. A dovetail or a proper mortise joint interlocks; it holds because of its shape. Staples and glue hold because of the glue, and glue lets go.

Every drawer we make is jointed. It is slower and it is invisible from the outside, which is exactly why it is the first thing a factory cuts when it is competing on price.

Questions People Ask About Wood, Walnut & Burl

Plain answers, from the workshop floor.

Is burl wood solid or veneer?

Always veneer, on any maker's furniture. Burl is a swirled growth on the side of a tree — it comes in small pieces and moves too much to build a frame from. A burl face is a thin leaf of that pattern laid over a stable core, which is both the only way it can exist on a cabinet front and more stable than solid timber would be.

Which wood is best for furniture in India?

Teak, if the piece will see damp or changing air — it is oily and stays put. Walnut for dining tables and anything that wants a fine, dark, hand-rubbed finish. Oak where the room needs lightening. What matters more than the species is that the timber was properly seasoned before it was cut.

How do I tell if a piece is well made?

Open a drawer and look at the corner. Interlocking joints — dovetails, mortise and tenon — hold because of their shape. Staples hold because of glue, and glue lets go. The joint is invisible from the outside, which is exactly why it is the first thing cut when a factory competes on price.

Will a solid wood table crack in the Indian climate?

Not if the timber was seasoned before it was cut and the top was built to move. Wood expands and contracts between the monsoon and the dry season; a well-made top is fixed in a way that allows it. Keep it out of direct sun and away from an air-conditioner blowing straight onto it, and it will be fine.

Is delivery free?

Yes, and it stays free — no end date, no minimum. We deliver your piece to your door anywhere in mainland India, crate, freight, transit cover, e-way bill and GST included. Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep go by sea at actual cost; outside India is quoted per port.

Is there a minimum order for free delivery?

No. There is no minimum, no remote-area fee and no fuel surcharge. One bedside table travels on the same free terms as a twelve-piece bedroom, to Mumbai or to Leh, and the crate is built around your finished piece.
