Velvet and Bouclé Furniture, Upholstered to Order

Velvet is the fabric that makes a room look expensive from the doorway. It has a pile — short fibres standing up off the weave — which is why it catches the light differently as you walk past it, and why a velvet sofa reads as one deep colour rather than a flat one. We upholster in your fabric or ours, in any colour, to your measurements.

Velvet & Bouclé, Explained Plainly

What it is, what it does well, what it does not, and how to look after it. Written by the people who cut it.

Why velvet looks the way it does

The pile lies in a direction. Brush it one way and it looks lighter, the other way and it looks darker — the same fabric, the same colour. That is not a fault; it is the whole effect, and it is why a velvet sofa has depth that a flat weave never gets.

It also means the fabric has to be cut with the pile running the same way on every panel, or a sofa comes out looking like two shades. That is a workshop discipline, not a fabric property.

Cotton, silk and performance velvet

Cotton velvet is the softest and the most matt. Silk velvet has the deepest sheen and the highest price, and it marks if you look at it. Performance velvet — polyester or a blend — is engineered to resist stains and rubbing, and it now looks close enough to the natural fabrics that most families should just use it.

If the sofa is in a room with children, dogs or daily use, take the performance fabric. Save the silk for a chair in a bedroom.

Bouclé, and when it is the better answer

Bouclé is a looped yarn, so the surface is nubbly rather than smooth. It hides marks far better than velvet, it does not show a pile direction, and it reads modern where velvet reads classical.

On a big curved sofa or a lounge chair it is often the calmer choice — the shape does the talking and the fabric stays quiet.

Hand-tufting and what it costs you in comfort

A tufted back is pulled down at each button by hand, one at a time, so the fabric folds into a diamond. It is slow work and it is why a deep-buttoned chesterfield costs what it does.

It is also firmer to lean on than a plain back. If you want the look and the softness, we can tuft the back and leave the seat plain — most people who ask for it end up choosing that.

Questions People Ask About Velvet & Bouclé

Plain answers, from the workshop floor.

Is velvet practical for a family sofa?

Performance velvet is. It is a polyester or blended pile engineered to resist stains and rubbing, it now looks close to the natural fabrics, and it survives children and dogs. Cotton velvet is softer and marks more easily; silk velvet is beautiful and should stay on a bedroom chair.

Why does my velvet sofa look like two different colours?

Velvet has a pile that lies in a direction, so light hits it differently depending on where you stand — that shading is the effect, not a fault. What IS a fault is panels cut with the pile running different ways, which makes a sofa look genuinely two-tone. Every panel we cut runs the same way.

What is bouclé, and how is it different from velvet?

Bouclé is a looped yarn, so the surface is nubbly instead of smooth. It has no pile direction, it hides marks better than velvet, and it reads modern where velvet reads classical. On a large curved sofa it is usually the calmer of the two.

Can I use my own fabric?

Yes. Send us the fabric or the name of it and we will tell you how many metres your piece needs before you buy. We will also tell you honestly if it is too light for the use you have in mind.

Is delivery free?

Yes, and it stays free — no end date, no minimum. We deliver your piece to your door anywhere in mainland India, crate, freight, transit cover, e-way bill and GST included. Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep go by sea at actual cost; outside India is quoted per port.

Is there a minimum order for free delivery?

No. There is no minimum, no remote-area fee and no fuel surcharge. One bedside table travels on the same free terms as a twelve-piece bedroom, to Mumbai or to Leh, and the crate is built around your finished piece.
