Leather Furniture, Upholstered to Your Size
Leather is the one upholstery that improves with use. A good hide softens, darkens where hands rest and takes on a shine at the arms — a patina that a fabric can only lose. What decides whether you get that or a plastic-looking surface in two years is the grade of the hide, and almost nobody selling leather furniture explains it. Here it is.

Full-grain, top-grain, and the ones that are not leather
Full-grain is the whole outer surface of the hide with nothing sanded off. It carries the natural marks and it is the only grade that develops a real patina. Top-grain has had the surface lightly sanded and corrected — more uniform, slightly less character, still a proper leather.
Below that, names get slippery. "Bonded leather" is ground-up scrap glued to a backing; "PU leather" is plastic. Both peel. We do not use either, and if a quote you are comparing does not say which grade it is, that is the question to ask.
Aniline, semi-aniline and pigmented
Aniline leather is dyed all the way through with no surface coating. It is the softest and the most beautiful, and it marks — a drop of water leaves a spot until it dries out.
Pigmented leather has a coloured coating on top. It is tougher, more uniform and it wipes clean, which is why it is the sensible choice for a family sofa. Semi-aniline sits between the two and is where most people land.
Why a leather sofa is measured in hides, not metres
Fabric comes on a roll of fixed width. A hide is the shape of an animal, with a neck, a belly and scars, and the usable area is what is left after those are cut around. That is why leather is quoted in square feet of hide and why the price jumps with the size of the piece.
It also means a large sofa cannot be cut from one hide. Panels are matched for colour and grain before cutting so the joins do not read.
Living with leather in India
Heat and direct sun are what damage leather — the hide dries, then it cracks. Keep a leather sofa out of a sunbeam and away from a heat source and it will outlast everything else in the room.
Dust it weekly with a dry cloth, wipe spills immediately, and feed it with a proper leather conditioner once or twice a year. Never use a household cleaner, and never use water on aniline.

What is the difference between full-grain and top-grain leather?

Which leather should I choose for a family sofa?
Pigmented or semi-aniline. Pigmented has a coloured coating on the surface, so it wipes clean and resists marking. Aniline is dyed through with no coating — softer and far more beautiful, but a drop of water leaves a spot until it dries. Save aniline for a chair in a room that sees less traffic.
How long does a leather sofa last?
A well-made one in full- or top-grain leather outlasts every fabric sofa in the house — decades, and it looks better as it goes. What kills leather is heat and direct sun, which dry the hide until it cracks. Keep it out of a sunbeam and condition it once or twice a year.
Can you make a chesterfield to my size?
Yes. The deep buttoning is done by hand, button by button, and the piece is built to whatever length, depth and height your room needs. Send us the wall it is going against and we draw it around that.
Is delivery free?
Yes, and it stays free — no end date, no minimum. We deliver your piece to your door anywhere in mainland India, crate, freight, transit cover, e-way bill and GST included. Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep go by sea at actual cost; outside India is quoted per port.
Is there a minimum order for free delivery?
No. There is no minimum, no remote-area fee and no fuel surcharge. One bedside table travels on the same free terms as a twelve-piece bedroom, to Mumbai or to Leh, and the crate is built around your finished piece.
