Most furniture you see in a shop was made far away, by a machine, in large numbers. It was built for no one in particular. Ours is the opposite. Behind every Designatore piece is a real workshop, real hands, and real time. What a furniture atelier really means

“Atelier” is an old word for a craft studio. It simply means a workshop where skilled people make things by hand. A furniture atelier is not a fast factory line where the same chair drops off a belt every minute. It is a place where makers build one piece at a time, with care, for one home.

Furniture does not build itself. Behind each piece is a small team of skilled people, and many of them have worked with wood, stone and fabric for most of their lives. In our workshop you will meet several kinds of makers, each with one job they know deeply.

Skill like this is not learned from a book. It is passed down, hand to hand, over many years. A young maker starts with small jobs and slowly earns the harder ones. By the time someone carves a full crest or sets a stone top, they have done it a thousand times. That quiet, patient learning is what you feel when you run your hand over a finished piece.

How we build furniture, step by step

People often ask what really happens between the first idea and the finished piece. Here is the honest path your furniture takes through our atelier. It is close to how all fine bespoke furniture is made, with a few things we do our own way.

1. We start with your room. We take the real sizes of your space, note the light, the doors, and how you live. Nothing is guessed. This is where our design process begins.
2. We draw the piece. Our team turns your room into a clear drawing, with every size marked. You see it and approve it before any wood is cut.
3. We choose the materials. We pick the wood, stone, metal and fabric for your piece. You can read how in how we choose materials.
4. We cut and shape. Machines make the first clean, safe cuts. Then the makers take over by hand for the fine work.
5. We build the frame. Joiners lock the frame together with strong joints, not just glue and staples. This is what makes a piece last.
6. We carve and set. Carvers add detail. Setters fit the stone and brass. Every join is checked by eye and by hand.
7. We upholster. For soft pieces, the inside is built up in layers, then the cover is cut and sewn to fit tight and clean.
8. We finish. The surface is sanded, coloured and polished, sometimes many times, until it feels perfect.
9. We check everything. Before a piece leaves, it is inspected closely. If it is not right, it does not go.
10. We deliver and install. We bring the piece to your home and set it in place, so it fits the room just as we planned.

Notice how much of this path is done by hand. The machine helps at the start, but it cannot judge a joint, feel a surface, or match a grain. Only a person can do that. This is why the same design, built in two places, will never come out the same. Ours carries the mark of the people who made it.

The materials we work with in the workshop

A piece is only as good as what goes into it. In our atelier we keep real materials on hand, not photos of them. Makers can feel the wood, hold the stone up to the light, and match the metal to the fabric in the same room. How long a piece takes to build

Real craft takes time, and we are honest about that from the start. A small table can be ready in a few weeks. A large bed, a stone dining table, or a full wardrobe wall takes longer, because there are more steps and more drying to wait for. Most pieces take four to twelve weeks in the workshop, after the design is set.
